I’ve been through many a workout era and some have been wonderful and joyful and others have been a slog. Even the workouts I have loved are sometimes hard and easy to dread. (Especially in the beginning when it’s not a habit yet.) It really helps to figure out what your barriers are. For me, environment is huge. If it feels like an icky dungeon, I am much less likely to motivate. It has to feel pleasing to me. Also, commute and parking. My best eras have been when I can walk somewhere, or I can drive and not worry about traffic/parking. I don’t want more stress! Barriers for arrival must be low! I also really like working out somewhere that doesn’t feel sceney or full of influencers. I do Pilates now and most of the other ppl are older women and I love it. Zero competitive vibes.
Another big help for me is to NOT be overly goal oriented. My only job is to show up. Do I want to get stronger? Yes. But I don’t focus on the goal too much. Some days I have a lot of energy to give and other days, I don’t. When my only job is to show up, I’m less likely to get into stupid mind games with myself.
